
Why Does My Doctor Keep Telling Me My Labs Are Normal?
You feel genuinely unwell. You’ve had bloodwork done — maybe multiple times. And every time, your doctor reviews the results and tells you everything looks fine. Normal. Within range. Nothing to worry about.
But you don’t feel fine. And that gap between what the numbers say and how you actually feel is one of the most demoralizing experiences in medicine.
You’re not crazy. You’re not imagining your symptoms. And there’s a very real explanation for why this keeps happening.
YOU FEEL ANYTHING BUT NORMAL
The Problem With “Normal”
Standard laboratory reference ranges are built from population statistics, not individual health optimization. When a lab says your result is “normal,” it means your value falls within the range of the middle 95% of people tested — which includes a very large number of people who are not actually healthy.
Think about that for a moment. If you test a population that includes people who are sedentary, chronically stressed, nutritionally depleted, and subclinically ill, the “normal” range will reflect all of that. Being in that range doesn’t mean you’re well. It means you’re not an outlier in an unwell population.
Functional medicine uses different reference ranges — ones based on what’s associated with optimal health and absence of symptoms, not just absence of diagnosed disease. The difference can be dramatic. A TSH of 3.5, for example, falls within the conventional “normal” range but is well above the functional optimal range for many patients — and can produce very real symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Standard labs usually miss:
Subclinical thyroid dysfunction
Most standard panels check only TSH. A complete thyroid picture requires free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies. Without these, significant thyroid dysfunction can be entirely invisible on paper.
Functional nutrient deficiencies
Standard panels often include tests for B12, vitamin D, and iron — but use reference ranges that only flag severe deficiency. Someone can be significantly depleted in magnesium, zinc, ferritin, or folate and still fall within the “normal” range. These deficiencies can produce fatigue, brain fog, mood disorders, muscle weakness, and a host of other symptoms.
Hormonal imbalance
Comprehensive hormonal assessment — including sex hormones, adrenal hormones, and their metabolites — is almost never included in a standard panel. Even when hormone levels are tested, they’re often interpreted against broad population ranges rather than age-appropriate optimal ranges.
Inflammatory markers
Standard CRP testing measures gross inflammation. High-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP), homocysteine, and other advanced inflammatory markers can reveal chronic low-grade inflammation that standard testing completely misses — inflammation that drives fatigue, joint pain, cognitive impairment, and cardiovascular risk.
Chronic infections
Lyme disease, Epstein-Barr virus reactivation, and other stealth infections are notoriously difficult to detect with standard testing. The standard Lyme ELISA, for example, misses a significant percentage of positive cases. These infections can persist for years, producing a wide range of symptoms while standard testing comes back negative.
Toxic burden
Heavy metals, mycotoxins from mold exposure, and environmental chemicals are not tested in standard panels. These toxins accumulate in the body over time and can disrupt hormonal, neurological, and immune function — producing real symptoms with no detectable cause on a standard workup.
Gut health and absorption
Intestinal permeability, dysbiosis, and impaired nutrient absorption can underlie a wide range of symptoms — including fatigue, immune dysfunction, mood disorders, and skin conditions. Standard medicine rarely investigates gut health comprehensively unless there are obvious gastrointestinal complaints.
Why Does Conventional Medicine Works This Way?
This isn’t a criticism of individual physicians. Conventional medicine is built around a disease model — its primary job is to identify and treat specific diagnosed conditions. Standard labs are tools for that purpose. They’re designed to detect when something has gone seriously wrong, not to identify the early or subtle imbalances that cause symptoms before disease develops.
The system also operates under significant time constraints. A 15-minute appointment doesn’t allow for the kind of comprehensive history-taking and investigative work that complex, multi-system problems require.
What Does a Different Approach Looks Like?
Functional and integrative medicine starts from a different premise: that symptoms are meaningful signals, not noise, and that the goal is to identify and correct the underlying imbalances producing them — not just rule out serious disease.
This typically involves a much more extensive initial evaluation — a detailed health history, thorough review of prior records, and advanced testing tailored to the specific pattern of symptoms. The goal is to build a complete picture of what’s out of balance, not just confirm what isn’t catastrophically wrong.
